Research

I was always enthusiastic about biology, and I was particularly interested in the animals. During my studies, I focussed on the topic of water and studied the larvae of soldier flies (Stratiomyidae). During my PhD, I discovered another very important group of flies, the hoverflies (Syrphidae), as a research topic. They are one of the most important pollinator groups in the order Diptera. As many larvae feed on aphids, they play an important role in biological pest control. Through the hoverflies I was able to combine my interests in ecology and agricultural science. I have been studying this group for over 10 years, e.g. the ecology or pollen nutrition, different recording methods and Red List species of hoverflies. As a new member of the WildPosh project, I will be investigating the effect of pesticides on various insect pollinators.
