Teaching

The Chair of Nature Conservation and Landscape Ecology is leading the B.Sc. degree Environmental Natural Sciences and is coordinating and teaching the minor Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation. In the M.Sc. degree, Environmental Sciences the Chair is coordinating the elective track Land Use and Nature Conservation. Link

Our teaching in the B.Sc. program includes ecology and conservation (conservation biology and conservation in praxis) of different national and international terrestrial ecosystems and cultural landscapes including aspects of agroecology and applied ecology. The main goals of our B.Sc. courses are:

(1) to build foundations in the biology and ecology of plants and animals

(2) teach theories in ecology, conservation (including invasion biology) and landscape ecology

(3) equip students with the skills and expertise to apply their knowledge to address environmental challenges in various contexts, including theoretical concepts and applied exercises

Our students develop praxis-relevant questions and contribute to solving problems in nature conservation. We combine interactive lectures, practical courses, exercises and excursions to best convey the different aspects of landscape ecology and nature conservation. The integration of stakeholders is a key element in our modules.

The main goal of our M.Sc. courses is to impart students with advanced skills in species identification of plants and insects and foster a deep understanding of animal and landscape ecology and conservation with focus on the ecology of sustainable cultural landscapes.

In response to the different requirements that our students will face in their future careers, they utilize a variety of communication tools such as scientific essays, reports, management plans or outreach publications based on their studies in our courses.

We revise the context of our courses regularly to include innovative topics and methods in our rapidly changing research fields and to best prepare students for diverse aspects in academic, applied or administrative working environments in ecology or conservation.

Our Bachelor and Master theses are mostly, but not exclusively, conducted in our ongoing research projects. See Link for finalize thesis and Link to open B.Sc./M.Sc. theses.
